Surf's up in Baler
Areas that face the Pacific Ocean have the advantage of boasting a playground for surfers. This is the blessing that Baler, Aurora has. For half of the year, waves that are twice the height of the average Filipino, crash on the coasts of the town. In fact, surfing competitions and clinics are held in the beaches of Cemento and Sabang. Surfboards may be awarded to winners or leased to learners who wish to be taught the rudiments of the sport. The beach in Sabang is perfect for those learning the sport since the seabed is covered with sand.
Experienced surfers who seek challenges opt for the waves that come calling at Cemento Beach. The presence of a reef within the area creates a point break. On relatively calmer seas from March ‘til August, visitors as well as locals, can swim or snorkel without getting mashed to a pulp. Snorkelers would not be limited to exploring the reef that can be found at Cemento beach but also those surrounding the islets of Lukso-lukso, Aniao and Dimadimalangat. These islets have reefs that are inviting to divers.
However, Baler’s jewels are not limited to the sea. You need not be a mere spectator of sports enthusiasts having all the fun while you are left on the sidelines. It can be a vacation spot to those who don’t like getting wet. Baler itself produced a son who later became the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth – Manuel L. Quezon. A marker has been placed in his honor and memory, located in what is now known as Quezon Memorial Park. Other markers found in this town are those of Pres. Quezon’s wife -- for whom the province was named after – and Lt. Commander James Gilmore. The latter had a historic role in his and his men’s capture during the siege of Baler.
