Doing Nothing in Santa Fe
In the northern part of Cebu is a tiny island called Bantayan. Bantayan Island is composed of three towns: Madridejos, Bantayan and Santa Fe. Santa Fe is where a wide expanse of beach can be found as well as the island's sea port and air strip. So those who dislike traveling for four hours from Mactan-Cebu International Airport or any other local airport can opt for an air taxi. For those on a budget, there are always buses at the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City. Alternatively, you can ask the cab driver at the airport to take you straight to Hagnaya port in San Remigio where you can hop aboard a boat from there to Santa Fe.
Being somewhat an isolated place, the town, particularly the beach, is relatively quiet (except during Holy Week) and ideal for practicing the art of doing nothing, staring into space or allowing your self to be mesmerized by the sunset. It also offers a kind of quiet that is conducive to a laid-back honeymoon or anniversary. Couples may also ask fishermen if they could possibly take visitors to neighboring islands for a bit of island hopping; the town of Santa Fe also includes Guintacan and Hilantagaan islands.
The place could also be a haven for artists -- whether literary or visual -- to draw inspiration from nature or the local folks. Cloud formations at dusk or at dawn can bring out your genius. The palette of the sky, the murmur of the wind, the caresses of the sea or even the smell of drying fish can stimulate your senses.
Food and dining are not limited to fancy bars and restaurants but to ambulant vendors and small diners, called carinderias, as well. Food fare include fresh catch from the sea, like fish, scallops and other shellfish which are rich in omega-3. Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA (decosahexaenoic acid), is essential for brain development; DHA is stored in a woman's hip and thighs for use during pregnancy. You can also get omega-3 from grass-fed or grazing cow. More than that, food sold by locals in Santa Fe cost much less than those sold even in fastfood chains.
